Support for veterans memorial park
Dear Editor:
I was glad to see and read Jim Powers' letter to the editor (6/5). In his letter he proposed the creation of a veterans memorial park instead of basketball courts and expanded parking, for the former tennis court site that abuts the school parking lot on Townsend Avenue. I couldn't agree with him more and hope others will support him with his proposal.
We have an opportunity to do something of lasting value and significance at this site while simultaneously enhancing the attractiveness of our town. It would be a shame to settle for anything else.
A park would also complement the sidewalk project that is planned for Route 27 that will connect the YMCA with the Boothbay Common. The park could serve as a rest area or way station at the conjuncture of the existing sidewalk with the new one.
I intend to send a copy of this letter to our selectmen and hope that if you favor Jim's plan you will let our selectmen know that you believe a simple, attractive green park is a far better choice for this property, rather than covering it with more macadam for unneeded additional parking.
