Mike Hammond donates land to school district
At the last Community School District Trustees meeting for the 2013-2014 school year, the trustees discussed donations made to the school, nominated new officers, and discussed projects being planned for over the summer.
Trustee Kevin Anthony announced that after discussing possibly buying a parcel of property from Hammond Lumber, Mike Hammond of the Belgrade office offered instead to give the school the land.
This gift of 2.05 acres means the upper field where kids play will still exist, along with the softball field and sufficient parking for track meets, once the new track is built.
King said that any legal fees incurred through transfer of the property would be footed by the school, such as surveys or title transfer.
But the donations didn’t stop there. Superintendent Eileen King said that contractor Eric Wood had donated time and materials both to deliver sand for the jump pit and resetting the Perkins field dugout, which had blown over during a windstorm.
The materials and labor equaled a value of $322.50. King drafted and sent a letter to Wood as thanks.
Other items
Trustees also discussed summer projects being done by Maintenance Supervisor Dave Benner. These include the annual cleaning, refinishing the multiple floors and hallways in both schools, having the fire equipment serviced, the elevator and fuel tanks inspected, painting the gyms in both the elementary and high schools, replacing carpets on the third floor of BRES and rooms 114 and 115, placing chains and posts to prevent people from driving directly to the new tennis courts and damaging the lawn, looking into placing a light at the school/Y crosswalk, cleaning windows, and other small projects.
Benner created a schedule for these projects to take place between mid-June and late August.
The trustees also elected their new officials for next year. Chris Buchanan remained chairman, and Richard Hallinan remained vice-chairman. Buchanan nominated Cameron Mitchell, who has never held office, to become treasurer, and the motion passed.
The trustees adjourned for the summer. Their next meeting will take place September 3, 2014 at the high school library at 5:15 p.m.
