Wiscasset Senior Center: Looking for a new chef
Our chef, Julie Bellfleur, will not be renewing her contract at the end of June. We will miss her and I know I will miss the great soups she has made over the last year.
I’ve kidded her that her soup is always tomato soup, but in fact even on those rare occasions when she has made tomato soup, it has been some variation that has made it different and delicious. Her soups have always been “homemade” with a variety of ingredients that made the soup a highlight of the meal, at least in my mind.
The Senior Center chef or “cook” is an independent contractor engaged to provide a meal within certain guidelines. The cook is not an employee of the Senior Center or the town. The agreement is set up basically to run a year based on the fiscal year of the Senior Center, which runs from July 1 through June 30.
A small committee has been formed to search for a new cook. Starting in July of this year we will be eliminating the Thursday lunch and going with just the Wednesday evening public supper. As you know, the attendance at all the meals have been dwindling with the lunch getting to a level that is not feasible to continue.
There is a concern about the future of the Senior Center. In the June newsletter, Ellie Tracy has written a good article about the possibility of reducing the number of trustees in order to “…have greater efficiency of a more streamlined board in making decisions.” She asks the readers for feedback. I encourage everyone to think about this issue and give Ellie your opinion. If you haven’t seen the newsletter, it can be downloaded at the bottom of the home page at www.wiscassetrec.com.
The Wiscasset Senior Center can make a turn around and become a growing, dynamic and energetic organization if people 50 years old and older get on board. There is great potential. We have a tremendous facility and many good people in the area.
The annual member breakfast and meeting is planned for June 28 starting at 8:30 a.m. A business meeting will be held immediately after the breakfast. Plan on being there and make your opinions known.
