Student council elections coming up at BRHS
It's student council election time at Boothbay Region High School, but students are not exactly clamoring to get into office.
“Interest has been waning for the past few years,” said Manon Lewis, art teacher and student council coordinator. “When my son was in high school 10 years ago there were a lot of kids running and (a lot of) interest. That's changed.”
Two students (currently juniors) are running for student body president: Karl Alamo and Chris Groneng. Running for class president are Nichole LaBrecque and Kyle Alamo for seniors, Hannah Morley for juniors; and Kate Friant for sophomores.
A handful of students have signed up to run for other positions such as vice president or secretary, but there are fewer students running than there are positions open. Lewis will be sending out a plea to students and parents to run, but can only keep nominations open for a little while longer.
“It's a big boost on your college application, being involved in student government,” Lewis said.
Those interested in running should contact Mrs. Lewis or senior Sophia Thayer, current student body president.
