Rally for Democracy
Dear Editor:
On Saturday, April 19, more than 800 people gathered peacefully on the Boothbay Common for a community rally. It was one of the largest events of its kind in recent memory—positive, respectful, and grounded in civic engagement. Organized by a grassroots organization, the rally was publicized widely and open to all, regardless of political affiliation.
Attendees came together to share ideas, discuss concerns about the current political climate, and offer one another encouragement. The energy was one of unity, not division. We’re grateful to the sheriff’s department for being present and supportive, and proud that the event remained entirely lawful, peaceful, and welcoming from start to finish.
It’s important to be clear: this rally did not incite violence, nor did it interfere with the start of Boothbay’s tourist season. There were no disruptions, no confrontations, and no hostility—just neighbors gathering in community. Boothbay remains a place where everyone is welcome, and events like this one reflect our region’s long-standing values of open dialogue and civic participation.
We thank everyone who attended, helped organize, and supported the rally. It was a strong reminder that people can come together to listen, speak, and stand for what they believe in—respectfully and peacefully.
