New transfer station building closing in on completion date
Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District's new building is headed for completion. During the April 10 meeting, interim station manager William Johnson updated directors on the project's progress. "We poured concrete yesterday and the completion date should be in a couple weeks," he said.
The building is a 30-foot-by-40-foot-steel, single-slope roof, two open bays, one closed bay and 36-inch-by-7-inch door. Clear Stream Construction of Boothbay is erecting the building.
Clear Stream Construction bid $325,000 for tearing down the old and constructing the new building. Directors discussed other costs associated with the project during their meeting: A $15,750 quote for an additional concrete pad; a $10,000 paving quote; and a $5,500 quote to erect a separate building known as the "swap shop" or "pick pile."
Office flooring and windows received a $4,000 quote. New siding repair soffit on the truck garage received a $45,000 quote. "Directors are still deciding what features to include and not include so the final price isn't known," he said.
In other action, Johnson discussed options for wood chips disposal. He told directors brush chips are more profitable than wood chip disposal.
Currently, wood chips are sent to MB Bark Mulch in Auburn prior to their shipment to Canada. Johnson is discussing a new option to ship chips to RE Energy in Livermore Falls. Johnson told directors he was meeting with a wood chip broker in a couple days about which is the district's best option.
Johnson reported the station's workers will be undergoing some long overdue mandatory training sessions. He said forklift and bloodborne pathogens trainings are annual requirements. Johnson said forklift training hasn't been done since 2012 and bloodborne pathogens training hasn't been done since 2010.
The transfer station will be closed Monday, April 21 due to the Patriots' Day holiday. Directors meet next at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 8 in the district's business office.
