Monmouth holds off Boothbay, 47-36
They came close.
The Boothbay Region Seahawks girls basketball team nearly pulled off an upset at home Wednesday night, pulling to within six points, 38-32, of the now 7-5 Monmouth Mustangs early in the fourth quarter. However, the visitors hung tough, got timely baskets down the stretch, and pulled away for a 47-36 win at Porter Memorial Gymnasium.
Boothbay junior center Tatum French led the fine comeback by the Seahawks, scoring 11 of her game-high 25 points in the third quarter when Monmouth held a 10-to-12-point lead most of the game. It was the second time in a week that French scored 25 or more points, as she had 28 at Dirigo on Jan. 9.
At halftime, Monmouth led by 10, 24-14, and by eight after three quarters, 38-30. After Boothbay cut the Mustangs’ lead to six at 7:17 of the fourth quarter, Monmouth coach Keith Derosby called a timeout to settle his team down. About two and a half minutes later, the Mustangs built their lead to 12, 44-32, and the Seahawks wouldn’t draw much closer, especially with French fouling out with just under two minutes to play.
The Mustangs were led by junior guard Kaitlyn Frost with 21 points, followed by senior guard Rileigh Chase with 12.
Also scoring for Boothbay were freshman guard Lilly Brown with four, junior forward Sophie White with three, and freshman guards Arabella Hodgdon and Addie Barter each with two.
The Seahawks, now 2-10, next play at Maranacook on Friday, Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. Their next home game is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. against St. Dom’s.
