Interest in accessory dwelling units heard
At the Dec. 23 Boothbay Harbor Selectboard meeting, Chair Michael Tomko reported new accessory dwelling units (ADU) may be coming to the area. During a conversation about LD 2003, he said he was told by a Hammond Lumber associate several people from different states contacted the business with interest in building ADUs.
According to Tomko, no fewer than three people who plan to live in the area full time were "very interested" in adding garage apartments as ADUs to their property. He said they had expressed construction plans for 2025. However, no one has applied for an ADU in Boothbay Harbor so far, according to Code Enforcement Officer Geoff Smith
In the past year, the town and planning board have had several meetings and public forums on LD 2003 to meet next year's July 1 deadline to adhere to the state law. Draft ordinance language is being prepared for the May town meeting.
“I think the discussions we've had about size and space are all very germane, and I think we're doing the right thing and doing the right work,” Tomko said. “So, it's good to know that this is going to be showing up in front of our code enforcement or planning board.”
In other business, Town Manager Julia Latter updated the board on several upcoming requests for proposals (RFP) for town projects. She said RFPs for a new salt and sand shed, a consultant to help with the town’s comprehensive plan and work on municipal floats at Whale Park should be submitted in January.
In addition, the selectboard unanimously reappointed Michelle Farnham as the registrar of voters. Farnham's appointment is until Dec. 31, 2026.
