Southport Column
Due to bad weather the Southport Central School concert originally scheduled for Dec. 11, will be Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Southport Town Hall.
The next day our Southport Library will light up for an Open House Thursday, Dec. 19, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. At 10, you can enjoy “Story Time and Crafts” and from 1 through 3 you can listen to live piano music by Bob Moore. Cookies, coffee, and hot chocolate will be available to enjoy as well as conversations with your friends and neighbors all day. Remember to bring with you cans and boxes of food as a donation to the Food Pantry.
Sunday, Dec. 22 between about 1 and 3 p.m. keep your ears open for some singing around the island. The Southport Island Association has organized caroling group to bring cheer, especially to those who cannot get out much.
We need to get our food shopping in order by Dec. 21 as the Southport General Store will be closed from Dec. 22 through Dec. 29 and also on Jan. 1. On the 21st, the store hours will be 7 a.m. through 4 p.m. You can stock up on good food such as soups, mac and cheese, and pot pies that can be frozen for use during the staff holiday time, and you can buy plenty of Christmas treats such as cookies “hand crafted with our old family recipes.” Delicious and attractive platters of cheese and crackers, nuts, dried fruits, and other goodies are also available for Christmas parties. And you can buy a gift card to share these goodies with friends and family.
Other date changes due to the holidays are the selectmen’s meetings, which usually happen on Wednesday evening. Although they will meet as usual this Wednesday, Dec. 18, the next week the meeting will be Thursday, Dec. 26, and the following week, Thursday, Jan. 2 still at 5 p.m.
We welcome Jim Singer back home to the island after some surgery at at Maine Medical Center last week. I think it would take more than an errant heart beat to keep Jim down for long. Even so, follow the doctor’s orders, Jim.
The Southport Methodist Church will celebrate Christmas with a worship service on Sunday, Dec. 24 at 3 p.m. There will be no 8:30 a.m. service that day.
This column began with a reference to bad weather. Not sure when I have experienced such quick changes in weather zipping from mid fifties to teens in temperature and lovely, flaky snow to sleet and then a downpour of rain in precipitation. At least the snow came first so that the rain washed it all away without my drive having to be sloughed. Wonder what the rest of the winter will bring?
