Community Resource Council announces grant award to Woodchucks for new equipment
The Community Resource Council (CRC) has announced that the vestry and congregation of St. Columba’s Episcopal Church in Boothbay Harbor have awarded a generous grant to the Woodchucks, a dedicated volunteer group that provide firewood to those in need within the community. The funding, drawn from the Marg Winslow Bequest, comes with the stipulation that it be allocated to various local organizations for the benefit of residents living on the peninsula.
The Community Resource Council is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting local residents in need. Through eight programs and various partnerships, the CRC provides essential resources and services to help improve the quality of life for families in the Boothbay Harbor area.
The Woodchucksoperate year-round to gather, process, and deliver seasoned firewood to homes that qualify through the CRC’s assistance program. This invaluable service ensures that families have access to a vital heating resource during the colder months. The Woodchucks collect and process donated logs from around the peninsula, seasoning them for at least a year before delivery.Annually, the Woodchucks deliver approximately 75 cords of firewood, supporting numerous households in the community.
Currently, the group operates with two trucks, which are essential for hauling equipment like loaders and trailers, as well as various tools including chainsaws, log splitters, a yard tractor, and storage sheds. However, the older of the two trucks, a 1996 GMC with a service body, has reached the end of its useful life due to extensive rust, electrical issues, and significant mechanical problems.
Thanks to this grant, the Woodchucks have purchased a 2011 GMC one-ton dump truck with four-wheel drive and very low mileage. This new vehicle will greatly enhance their operational capabilities, allowing them to deliver a full cord of firewood to locations that are often inaccessible for the usual truck and trailer setup. Many recipients have specific requirements for delivery to avoid obstructing driveways and doors, and to ensure easy access during the winter months.
The CRC Director, Holly Stover expressesher gratitude to St. Columba’s Episcopal Church for their generous support, stating, "This grant is a testament to the Church’s commitment to serving our community and supporting those in need. The Woodchucks play a crucial role in ensuring that families have the resources they need to stay warm and safe during the winter."
