Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club
The Rotary Club House was full of laughter and conversation last Thursday as our club hosted over 80 Veterans and their families for a Veterans Appreciation Dinner. This wonderful event was resurrected by the Rotary Club High School Interact Club members. They were inspired by the stories of their family members who served in the military and wanted to honor and thank them. So, when they asked the Rotary Club board to partner with them, what could we say, but yes, sure, it will be fun. And it was.
Our wonderful chef, Amy Ronan, made dinner for over 100 people. Thank you, Amy. The Interact kids, directed by co-leaders, Sarah Clark and Bruce Harris, efficiently and cheerfully delivered all those meals to our guests, also making sure there was fresh coffee on the tables at all times. Laurie Zimmerli was a masterful Master of Ceremonies. She passed the microphone around and each veteran stood, saying their name, when and where they served followed by a round of grateful applause.
Mike Fritz, our keynote speaker, shared some of his experiences during the Vietnam war and how participating in “Honor Flight” with his grandson, Trevor, provided a positive, healing experience. He, and Trevor, encouraged every veteran to take advantage of “Honor Flight." They were engaging, moving speakers. Thank you Mike Fritz and Trevor.
Monica Churchill played the anthem of each service branch while the Interact Club kids led us all in song. A hundred people singing “Anchors Away,” “The Caissons Go Rolling Along,” and the other three service anthems was the perfect way to close the night.
This Thursday we are welcoming Rebecca Jacobs from the Boothbay Water District. She will talk about the Clean Waters Act and a surprising and amazing project to help keep our precious drinking water supply safe and available for many generations. Our Rotary Club is mentioned in this grant so come hear about this project and how we can help.
The Rotary Club Barn will be open every Saturday till Dec. 14, weather permitting. The pick up crew’s last day will be Saturday, Nov. 23. We will continue to accept drop off donations till our closure on Dec. 14.
We meet every Thursday at 6 p.m. for a fun, informative dinner meeting. We're always looking for new members, so join us. You'll be glad you did.
