Veterans Day ceremony at Southport Memorial Library
The Southport Memorial Library will host a Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11 to remember and honor those who served. All are invited to gather inside the library at 10:45 a.m. The ceremony will begin at 11 with a quiet moment as the flag is lowered outside. The ceremony will continue with prayers, song and the playing of Taps followed by a speaker.
Brigadier General Paul Smith will be the speaker for this ceremony. Paul “Greg” Smith served for more than 38 years in uniform, retiring as a U.S. Army Brigadier General. Greg spent 35 years in the Massachusetts Army National Guard and served in staff and command assignments including Joint Task Force Commander during the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombings Response, as well as border security missions and peacekeeping force development in South America. He also pursued a parallel career as a special education teacher and high school administrator. His writing has appeared in Military History, ARMY, Canada’s History, Country Living, Career World and other periodicals, and he is the author of a book titled, "Confessions of a Weekend Warrior: Thirty Five Years in the National Guard." He teaches Counterterrorism Strategy at Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts. After the ceremony, General Smith will be available to answer any questions.
Attendees are encouraged and welcome to stay at the library after the ceremony to share in fellowship, cider, coffee and sweet treats, as well as to watch Jim Singer’s tribute to the veterans of the area.
