Sprucewold Column: ’Til next time, bocce and more
Beautiful Maine August weather, warm days, lower humidity, and cooler nights. Like others, our cabin is getting quieter by the day. The last of the New Yorkers left Thursday, the North Carolina contingent left on Saturday, the Worcester, Massachusetts group left Sunday after the entire season with us, the New Zealander left Monday by way of Seattle, and the Rhode Islanders are here for one more week!
Dan and Christine Smith have put their cabin on Bayberry Road up for sale after 27 years. There has been a flurry of interest since it went on the market last week. Though they are selling, they’ll be back to visit family in Sprucewold.
An afternoon of bocce was held at 1 on Wednesday, Aug. 21 on Linekin Green. Ahren Rittershaus and his father, Charles; Wally Moulaison, his cousin-in-law, Frank Villante, and his brother-in-law, Ron Mahoney; Doug and Sandy Seim; and Dan and Ruth McLaughlin competed in a tournament that lasted more than two hours. May this be the beginning of an annual event! If you would like to hold an event on Linekin Green, please contact Linekin Heights Association president Wally Moulaison.
On Saturday, Aug. 24, the annual Southport Fireman’s Auction was held. It was the first time in many years that I was unable to go. I was on a round trip to Logan Airport with our son’s family, but I heard from our three daughters that it was a great time with treasures galore. The auction is such a family tradition that when our youngest daughter, Emily, got married on auction day on 8/18/18, her husband-to-be, Ben Haggett, made sure he got there early to check on tools and boats! Ben restores antique knives, hatchets, and axes; carves new handles after cleaning and sharpening the blades. He also repairs heirloom watches and clocks, vintage boats and motors. He’s a true craftsman, like his father, Chip.
The Sprucewold Association slate of officers approved by the executive committee are: Annaliese Neff, president; Jeanne Koenig, first vice president; Danielle Bazinet, second vice president; Elaine Fossett Rittershaus, secretary; Artie Sullivan, treasurer; and Tony Vieira, clerk. Dotty Reilly, Elisa Goldsmith, Pat Thompson, and Jessica Ludwig have volunteered to help with the social committee. Thank you one and all!
As a reminder, the Sprucewold Association maintains the area mailbox housing and notice boards, our street signs, Nahanada Park, and the Crooked Pine Float (CPF), as well as sponsors the opening party and the annual potluck. Additionally, the Cabin Watch, Firewise, the Sprucewold Interest Group on Facebook, the annual Sprucewold Directory, and the Boothbay Register column are all facets of the association. The street signs will be updated and replaced as needed over the winter.
If you are not a member of the Sprucewold Beach Club and you’d like access to the water for boating and kayaking, you can join the Sprucewold Association and use the Crooked Pine Float. The CPF is a line item on the dues form, and for a yearly fee, you can keep a kayak on the shore or a dinghy at the dock.
Jacob Moulaison has begun his college career at Maine Maritime Academy, and Alex Goldsmith is starting his freshman year at Rollins College. Carpe Diem!
