American Legion Post 36
Veterans are continuing to get correspondence from organizations, companies, and attorneys that would let you believe that if you contacted them, they could get you benefits you couldn’t get some other way, like going directly to the VA. Some of the correspondence can get very personal, addressing it to the veteran by name. Might even say that “after reviewing your case, you likely are eligible for ... benefit.” And then they ask you to call a number. My overall advice is to throw that away. But, whenever that happens, I suggest sending it to the VA to let them know this is happening. Or, send it to me and I’ll bring it to the VA’s attention. While there are very special circumstances when using an outside company/organization/attorney might be necessary, the VA or one of the authorized service organizations (DAV, American Legion, VFW, PAV, or MBVS) can get most all the benefits you have earned without costing you a dime. All of those organization are at Togus.
There was a recent issue where the VA sent out appointment cards for appointments you don’t have. There was a problem with the VA computer system and these were sent out in error. So, if you get an appointment card for an appointment you didn’t know you have, you likely don’t. You should call the VA, or use MyHealtheVet, to verify the card was sent in error.
This may be premature, but I am very excited that your American Legion Baseball team coaches have had their first meeting for the 2024 season. Many of our last year’s team will be coming back and “recruiting” will be happening soon. The State American Legion Baseball commissioner is in the process of defining the regions from which we can recruit players. Of course, all of our local players from last year will be eligible and signup starts Jan. 2.
Well, we are in that special holiday season! Chanukah is just ending (Dec. 15) and we are rapidly approaching Christmas! While the preparations for any holiday can be stressful, it seems December can be really difficult. Decorating, presents, getting the house ready can be challenging ... then the family and friends arrive and all of that is forgotten! Yup, was all worth it! It is important to reflect what is happening around the world and realize that not everyone is as fortunate as we are. You don’t have to look far, as we have those in our own community who are struggling. This is the season for giving! There are organizations that provide help to the international community as well as our own community. I am sure everyone has their favorite charity, so think about the good your extra change could do for those with little to nothing. Giving always puts a big smile on those that give!
So, wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and a joyous Holiday Season!
