Juniper and McKown Points: Work, tennis, celebrations and more
Friday morning, there was an volunteer repair crew working hard to fix a support that had slipped on the Moore’s landing stairs. Many thanks to Bridget Mansourian, Anne Dooley, and Dave Taylor, for alerting us to the problem, Ray Petzold, Carey Swope and Gordon Scowcroft for fixing the stairs.
After a dramatic storm Friday night, complete with a lightening show, the sun shone down again on us on Juniper Point. Reed’s beach is a busy place with young and old and in between beach goers, swimmers, paddle boarders and kayakers. Nights and early mornings have a crisp, dare I say, autumn like feel, that reminds us to enjoy every moment here.
Sarah Kurz and Ed Barker and their children Phoebe and Charlotte Barker have been visiting with Debbie and Chris Kurz for the past week. Phoebe and Charlotte have been playing orange ball and red ball tennis respectively.
Lucy and her fiancé,Sean are visiting Juniper Point for two weeks with Ann and Carey Swope. They arrived in time to help Ann and Carey celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary! Where does the time go?
Saturday evening was indeed a night for celebrations. One could here “Happy Birthday“ being sung to Phoebe Lewis (17) and a surprise, family party was held for Becky Taylor (a certain age).
If you live on the point you may be hearing a loud, disconcerting, screeching kind of animal wail late at night. Genie thinks it maybe a fox, although unusual for this time of year.
Tennis news from Dave:
Women's Doubles- Lizzie Lewis and Phoebe Lewis were champions in a close finals against Kathy Schwingle and Dianne Emery.
Men's Doubles - Rick Barton and Mike Derezin beat Jeff Kowalski and Jack Fleming in the finals..
Mixed Doubles - Won by siblings Tabor and Bowdoin Allen, grandchildren of Caroline Andrews. Sarah Barton and Azhar Meyer were the finalists.
Congratulations to all of our doubles tournament champions and participants for their high performance play with high stakes on the line (multi-generational bragging rights, name on the board in the Community House Wall of Fame, and a slick mug thanks to Dave P and company). Crowds were entertained every night by the competitive and exciting tennis! We also had a blast with our Pancake Breakfast and Tennis Exhibition on Saturday! Thanks to Rick Barton for playing with our tennis staff for doubles; and our Triples teams “Causing a Racquet” with Soren, Lizzie, Chris, Jeff, and George and team “Highly Strung” with Dave, Stu, Gordon and Sebastian!
This coming week we offer our singles tournaments for our bold and energetic tennis enthusiasts!
Our “Triples and Traditions” tennis event on Thursday night is going to be amazing! We plan to play our famous “Triples” game and follow it up with a Traditional Maine Bean Dinner! Join us, as a player or spectator!

On Aug. 13 I will be co-hosting a brief introduction with my 93-year-old father on the work of Beyond Borders, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending child servitude, preventing violence against women and girls, and promoting educational and other systems to support the people of Haiti. I would love it if you would join us. For each person who joins the call, Beyond Borders will receive a $100 grant from Vista Hermosa Foundation. You will not be asked for a financial contribution. My dad has organized our family to host several events this year to help ensure that Beyond Borders receives the maximum grant available. Would you be interested in participating on Aug. 13 at 1 p.m.? We will send zoom details in advance of the event. If you are not available on the above date but would like to be notified of our next call (in September or October), please let me know and I will update you as we are planning that event. emily.whitingdc@gmail.com
Thank you for considering it.
