Southport Junior Yacht Club
This past week brought rain and shine over to Southport, but we will take what we can get! Despite starting Monday off with cold fog, as the week progressed, Wednesday held sun and beautiful blue skies putting everyone in a great mood. As the life jacket tan lines form and new faces roll into SYC for the summer, the excitement for what these next weeks will bring is only growing.
In the morning class, Monday held seven swim tests for Parker Fitzsimons, Emmett Hand, Una O’Connolly, Molly Smith, Cooper Wright, Marlowe Wright, and James Bruenner. Once they finished their swim, as per SYC tradition they were greeted by their buddy with a hot chocolate, towel and a warm welcome to the Southport Yacht Club family!
In the afternoon class, the racing 420s towed their boats on a quick trip over to Boothbay for the Battle of the Bays regatta. After two long days of sailing and 42 boats total, Rachel Phippen and Skye Harrington placed 7th overall with Eleanor Marshall and Sofia Moen in 11th, Oliver Tineo and Finn Uhrich in 12th, Nate Phippen and Mia Dupee in 15th, Stella Field and Avery Khetani in 18th, Parker Baker and Abby Dupee in 28th, Cameron Luck and Logan Snyder in 29th, David Kershaw and Gus Giampetruzzi in 35th, and Graydon Smith and Maggie Doyle in 38th. In the race around the island race which did not count towards the overall score, Southport took 2nd and 3rd place!
For the Opti champ fleet, there were 16 boats and SYC sent four boats over. Hadden Brinegar placed 1st overall and 1st blue fleet, Brooks Baker placed 2nd overall and 2nd blue fleet, Mabel Kaler placed 4th overall and 4th blue fleet and Suri Kelchner placed 12th overall and 3rd white fleet!
Coming up this week, Kickball will take place at the Southport School on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and Bingo at the Southport Junior Yacht Club at 6 p.m. Bingo will have prizes from local spots in Boothbay Harbor from Janson’s to Baker’s Way to Sherman’s! Anyone is more than welcome to come to both events and the more the merrier!
