Sprucewold Column: Opening party and more
The Fourth of July fireworks went off on a fairly clear night and were enjoyed by all. A few hot sunny days then we are right back in the soup! Nothing can prevent the enjoyment of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, rain or shine the bright blooms brings smiles of appreciation.
The opening party was a great success with a larger number of attendees meeting and greeting one another. Sprucewold Association President Susan Otto Goodell welcomed everyone to the annual event. Members shared a sweet or savory offering and there were nine different plates of deviled eggs. The varied recipes were so popular that the platters were emptied in no time!
The Sprucewold Association has donated two new 8-foot picnic tables to the Linekin Green and will be very useful at upcoming events like the Aug. 5 potluck picnic. Thank you to Social Committee chairs Sarah Stedt and Rebecca Vacinek for another successful Sprucewold get together!
If you read this online before the 11th, don’t forget “Christmas in July” presented by Sprucewold’s own Margit Ahlin and Al D’Andrea at the Opera House of Boothbay Harbor; July 11, all seats are $20.
According to Ralph Kimball and co-chair Curt Audin, our Firewise Committee, Maine Forest Service Ranger Kent Nelson has announced that the Sprucewold Firewise Chipping Day will be scheduled for July 28 starting at 9 a.m. This is about two weeks earlier than normal but they have had to work around the schedules set up for their interns. We hope that all will participate in this valuable service to help keep the areas around your cottage free of flammable materials.
Check your email from June 12 to find the attached application which can be completed and returned to Ralph by email, print it and deliver it to his Birch Road mailbox, or drop it off at his house. The application also contains guidelines for preparation of the piles of brush we leave at the roadside. Please read the guidelines carefully, particularly the part about wet and decayed brush. This type of brush can and has jammed the inner workings of the chipping equipment. Since the Forest Service allocates one day for chipping at their Firewise Communities, any delay during chipping can have unfortunate consequences. The date of 2022 appears on the application but Ranger Kent has assured us that there are no changes for 2023. Let’s hope we have a great turnout this year despite the earlier date!
The Sprucewold Beach Club by-law change vote is due; please send in your ballot as soon as possible.
The Linekin Heights Association is working on fire safety guidelines to post for Sprucewold residents who would like to use the pavilion fireplace, watch this space.
We had company over the weekend and took them to Shannon’s Unshelled at her new location at the Boothbay Common. Loved the blueberry coleslaw and all her fried food batter is gluten free. We walked the Boothbay Region Land Trust at Oak Point, always beautiful even in the foggy mist. Although we miss the sun Sprucewold and this peninsula is a beautiful place to be.
