Association helping lobstermen

    Dear Editor:

I attended the selectboard meeting on Monday evening, May 8 and am writing to introduce myself and the Maine Coast Fishermen's Association (MCFA). MCFA is an industry-driven nonprofit working to restore the fisheries in the Gulf of Maine and sustain Maine's fishing communities for future generations. We are located in Brunswick but work with commercial fishermen all along Maine's coast. As the Director of Community of Programs for the organization, I run our Fishermen Wellness and Working Waterfront programs.

The Eastside Waterfront Park is an exciting project that will allow commercial fishermen access while also creating an opportunity for people to see activity on the waterfront. While combining these efforts is not easy, it's impact can be significant. And while saving the working waterfront is a piece of our goal (and that of many of fishermen) what we really want to see is for working waterfronts to expand and thrive in Maine's coastal communities - and it seems as though this is an opportunity to do just that.

Maine's fishing industry is constantly evolving as the ecosystem and market demands change. Twenty years ago lobster was only a small portion of what came across the docks but now it is the majority of landings in Maine. In another twenty years, species like squid, black seabass, and flounder may be what supports thriving businesses and feed local communities. Because change is a consistent part of this industry, fishermen (and the working waterfront) need to preserve and create opportunities to diversify and grow.

At MCFA we truly hope that this project is able to move through the process quickly, especially considering the number of fishermen in the community that are in dire need of access at this time.

MCFA has been visiting and working with BBH fishermen and waterfront stakeholders for a handful of years and we are very aware of the challenges, permits, and appeals. We are also aware that there is potentially some nefarious activities that have occurred (anonymous emails from one "Danielle Harrison") meant to disrupt, confuse, and discourage. We are happy to answer any questions about the working waterfront and our experiences working with other communities to preserve and protect access.
