Frances Perkins Center to search nationally for next exec director

Thu, 03/16/2023 - 2:15pm

Frances Perkins Center’s board of directors announced March 16 the launch of a national search for its next executive director. The announcement comes at an exciting juncture for the non-profit organization, founded in 2009, to honor the legacy of Perkins, the first woman to serve in a Presidential cabinet, as Secretary of Labor under Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and a driving force behind the New Deal. With the opening this summer of the newly restored Frances Perkins Homestead National Historic Landmark in Newcastle, a strong governing board and ambitious plans for expanding its educational program, the Center is poised for continued growth and increased impact in the years ahead.

The next executive director will succeed Michael Chaney, who shared with the board his plan to step down later this year after nine years at the Center’s helm, as the Homestead opens its doors to visitors of all ages. Chaney partnered with the board in raising more than $3.5 million in capital funds and successfully transitioning the privately owned 57-acre saltwater farm held by the Perkins family for six generations into a recognized national treasure.

“Working with an engaged board of directors,” said Board Chair Sarah Peskin, “Michael has been instrumental in making the Homestead a place of respite, renewal and inspiration for those who seek deeper understanding of our past and creative solutions to contemporary social and economic problems. We’re grateful for his steadfast leadership and commitment to facilitate a smooth transition; and we’re incredibly excited about the opportunities ahead!”

The Center has engaged Starboard Leadership Consulting to manage the executive search in close collaboration with the board. FMI: francesperkinscenter.org/national-search-for- executive-director
