News and Notes from the Community Center
Still Looking...We are still looking for a few volunteer drivers to help people get to medical appointments, the bank, the grocery store, etc. Our geographic area is from Damariscotta to Brunswick, but most appointments are here in town. This is the essence of our People Helping People program which so many folks rely on because they cannot get to their appointments without our volunteer drivers. You get to choose if you can fit the appointment into your schedule. Thank you so much for your help. Please feel free to contact us for the details (633-9876).
Special Week: Carol Cragin, who has been fearlessly leading our Knitting Group ever since it began, is moving to Ohio towards the end of the month. This Saturday, March 11, from 2 to 4 p.m., we will be having a celebration of her wonderful tenure with us. Please join us for cake and libation.
Early Notice: On March 22, Mary Baudo will be holding a special class here utilizing exercises to improve our Balance and Getting Up Off the Floor (just in case) from 12:30 to 2 p.m. We will be giving you more information next week.
And now, just a few more words about Mah-Jongg: Mah-Jongg has 166 tiles, but only 152 are used and the rest are spares. Why do they need spares? The 152 tiles are divided into four group and subgroups. Suits contain 36 tiles: Dots, Bams, Craks, Winds, Dragons, Flowers and Seasons, and of course Jokers! Here’s what the website says about Jokers. (I don’t understand all this so I’ll quote: “Jokers can substitute for any tile in a Pung (3 identical tiles), Kong (4 identical tiles), Quint (5 identical tiles) or Sextet (6 identical tiles). They cannot be used to substitute a tile in a Pair (2 identical tiles) or any single tile.” (ymimports.com) Accompanying this column are images of some pretty tiles. Sometime, I’d love to learn this fun game.
