Barbara Rumsey discusses local history
Friends of the Boothbay Region Historical Society, both current and future, will have one more opportunity this summer to enjoy a talk by local historian and curator Barbara Rumsey.
On Thursday, July 11, at 4 p.m. at the Boothbay Region Historical Society, Rumsey will speak on “Pursuing Local History and Writing About It,” a longer version of a program she presented in February.
Most recently, during Windjammer Days, she spoke to a full house at the Boothbay Region Historical Society about the history of Boothbay Harbor's footbridge and shared a number of anecdotes and photos from its110-year history.
Rumsey served for more than 25 years as the director of the Boothbay Region Historical Society and transitioned last winter to the position of local historian with the society. Her focus now is on organizing and cataloging documents, helping history researchers and writing local history.
Rumsey is well-known in the area for her popular newspaper columns and detailed books on local history, such as Boothbay Region Historical Sketches, Volumes I, II, and III; Colonial Boothbay, Mid-1600's to 1775; and Hodgdon Shipbuilding and Mills, 1816-1916.
Her books, as well as a number of others written about various aspects of local history by other authors, are available for sale during business hours at the BRHS at 72 Oak Street.
Admission to Rumsey's presentation is free and is open to the public. However, space is limited and reservations are strongly suggested. Please call 207-633-0820 to reserve a seat and for more information, see our website at www.boothbayhistorical.org.
