BRHS students create something new out of old
Two Boothbay Region High School students have brought renewed life to an outdated piece of library equipment. School Librarian Kerrin Erhard found an old card catalog in storage. She was reluctant to part with such a nostalgic item,so she decided to see if the wooden card catalog could be re-purposed.
Erhard consulted science, technology, engineering and math teacher Chip Schwehm about asking a couple students to find a new use for the old item. “The card catalog’s size and shape lent itself to turning into some sort of furniture, like a coffee table, and he found a couple of students who got right into it,” she said.
Students Nicholas Giles and Brett Smith began arriving to school early, and began working on the project under Schwehm’s guidance. Using shop tools, the project began taking shape and, last week, finally became an attractive piece of library furniture.
“This fabulous piece, made possible by joining old to new, and carefully crafted by two very talented Seahawks, is now able to be enjoyed by everyone who visits the library,” Erhard said.
