A round trip around Barters Island
Wed, 03/31/2021 - 3:45pm
Barges and cranes owned by Reed & Reed Construction of Woolwich circumnavigated Barters Island in Boothbay last week. The 10-mile nautical trip resulted in the barges and cranes ending up about 100 feet from where they started — at the new and temporary bridges connecting Hodgdon Island to Barters Island.
The equipment was moved to begin dismantling the temporary bridge in anticipation of the opening of the new automated bridge.
In early March, Maine Department of Transportation spokesman Paul Merrill said in an email that the estimated opening of the new bridge to traffic would be by mid-May.
