Two groups of Southport students helped wrap colored ribbons during the Pagan tradition of the Maypole. BEN BULKELEY/Boothbay Register
Melissa Cullina, director of education and staff botanist at the Coastal Maine Gardens, led the Southport Central School May Day celebration on the green in front of the school May 1. With warm weather returning, students listened to poetry and music as they welcomed the longer and warmer days.
Students also conducted a science experiment by dropping Mentos candies into bottles of soda to see which soft drink provided the biggest bang. The early returns showed that diet soda tended to spray a bit further.
