'Money Smart Week' at the library
Money Smart Week is a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances. This is achieved through the collaboration and coordinated effort of hundreds of organizations across the country including businesses, financial institutions, schools, libraries, not-for-profits, government agencies and the media.
These groups come together once a year to stress the importance of financial literacy, inform consumers about where they can get help and provide free educational seminars and activities throughout the week.
The Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library is a Money Smart Week partner and will be hosting three events April 22-24. All three programs begin at 1 p.m. at the library.
The April 22 subject is Medicare. Have you or someone you know tried to wade through the Medicare insurance system and found it confusing? Wanda Thomas from Spectrum Generations in Damariscotta plans to lead and hopefully answer your questions so you can make an informed decision about healthcare coverage.
On April 23, there is a session on Social Security, led by Robert Clark from the Portland SS Office. He will present a workshop covering an overview of benefits and Social Security online services. Learn about Social Security retirement, survivors, disability and Medicare.
Find out how to conduct Social Security business quickly and securely from your home or office computer. With a “my Social Security” account you can: get an instant, personalized estimate of your future Social Security benefits; use benefit planners to help you better understand your Social Security options as you plan for your financial future; apply for retirement, disability, spouse’s, and Medicare benefits; change your address, phone number and direct deposit; and much more.
Our subject on April 24 is Identity Theft, led by branch manager of the Boothbay Harbor Bath Savings Bank, Linda Anderson. She will discuss how to recognize and prevent identity theft, and then explain what steps to take if it does happen.
Registration for each of these programs is not mandatory but helpful. Please sign up by calling the library at 207-633-3112 or by emailing Barb House at barbh@bmpl.lib.me.us/.
