On Sunday afternoon, Sept. 8, more than 50 local residents celebrated Edgecomb Days at the Community Church on Cross Point Road.

Apple crisp, ice cream and games started the festivities, followed by music from singer-songwriter Kate McDonnell. The party was planned in February to thank the community for supporting the work done to replace beams in the church steeple. The building dates to 1832.

Several residents tried the new “Labyrinth in the Field,” created over the summer by Rev. Kate Pinkham and Sue and Thom Sikes. Thom Sikes drew the schematic which took four hours to lay out and provides a walkway one-third of a mile long. Pinkham provided much of the effort, hauling 15 loads of rock contributed by church members. Each load took three hours to place.

Pinkham was prompted to create the labyrinth after attending a presentation on the subject at Colby College. Visitors to the labyrinth are encouraged to walk at their own pace, using the opportunity to seek answers or meditate.

A number of games were in high demand from the community’s youngest members and included a bounce house, croquet, beanbag toss and face painting. Children also competed in a three-legged race.

At 3 p.m. Sept. 22, the church will offer a presentation about its labyrinth. At 3 p.m. Oct. 6, the blessing of the animals will be held. For more information, call 882-4060.
