Singing, dancing, violins and ukuleles highlight Y-Arts concert

The show started with an upbeat rendition of Toto’s “Africa,” with lots of dancing, followed by the tones of the ukuleles (and later violins) and the cute kiddies singing along to familiar songs. The 45-minute Y-Arts Spring Concert ended with, of course, more singing and dancing to “Better When I’m Dancin’” from the “Peanuts” movie.

Four of the Y-Arts’ groups, the Youth Choir, Ukulele Choir, Fiddlehead Violin Studio and Kiddie Choir, put on a fine show for the crowd of nearly 100 people Wednesday, June 5 at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor. Emily Mirabile directed the Youth and Kiddie Choirs while David Gagne led the Ukulele Choir and Emily Barker, the Fiddlehead Violin Studio musicians.

Soloists included Sarah Harris, singing “God Help the Outcasts” from Disney’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and Sophia Mansfield singing “I Always Knew” from “Annie Warbucks.”

The Kiddie Choir, the youngest Y-Arts performers, sang and moved to “Hot Potato,” “He’s Got the Whole World,” “Eensy, Weensy Spider,” and “Do Re Mi.”

The seven violinists (including instructor Emily Barker), accompanied by guitarist Soren Barker and pianist Anne Barker, played “Boil ’Em Cabbages Down,” “Twinkle Theme” and “Twinkle 1st Variation.”

The Youth Choir, with most of them resting since the opening number, got the concert rocking again with a selection from the TV program “Schoohouse Rock,” before finishing with “Better When I’m Dancin.’”
