Boothbay Region High School Seahawks track athletes competed in their first indoor relay meet in 10 years at the University of Southern Maine Dec. 29.

“It is one of the premier indoor events of the season, so it was great to be a part of it,” said Coach Nick Scott.

BRHS had an indoor track team from 1998 to 2008, but the program gave way to the growing popularity of Nordic skiing which Scott also coached. Due to enrollment numbers and shifting interest, indoor track has made a comeback.

Will Perkins and Zach Rollins represented the boys and Kate Wickline, the girls. Perkins set the bar for future Seahawks with his 5’8” high jump, the first in this event in BRHS history, which earned him fourth place and a spot at the state championships. Perkins placed 21st in the mile run in 4:57 which also earns him a spot at the state championships and a new school record by nearly half a minute.

Wickline ran her first ever mile run placing 16th overall in 6:23, just three seconds from qualifying for state championships.

“… (It) was the fastest one mile female freshman time at BRHS and the third fastest overall at BRHS,” said Scott.

Rollins picked up his first shot at competition as a high schooler and put it at 28’4.25” placing 26th – a feat, due to the ball being about four pounds greater in high school than in middle school, Scott said. Rollins’ put set a record for the best freshman throw at BRHS.

The Seahawks will compete next at USM on Friday, Jan. 4.
