Seahawks win third straight by edging Monmouth

The Boothbay boys basketball team continued its winning ways with a thrilling 66-63 victory over Monmouth Friday night at Porter Memorial Gymnasium. With 18.8 seconds remaining, sophomore guard Sullivan Rice made two free throws giving Boothbay a 64-61 lead. On the ensuing possession, Monmouth’s Connor Davies was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with 5.8 seconds remaining. Davies made two of three free throws trimming the lead to one.
On the ensuing throw-in, the Monmouth defense forced a held ball, but the possession arrow pointed Boothbay’s way. Monmouth fouled Seahawk guard Steve Reny who made both free throws giving Boothbay a 66-63 lead.
Monmouth had one last chance, but senior Connor Davies couldn’t connect on a wild 3-point attempt at the buzzer. Boothbay Coach I.J. Pinkham called Monmouth his team’s first real test of the season. In Boothbay’s first two Mountain Valley Conference games, the Seahawks defeated Lisbon by 27 and Mount Abram by 23. But Monmouth was a different story. The Mustangs led for most of the first half. Boothbay took its first lead at 29 to 27 late in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Boothbay’s transition game began working and the Seahawks pulled away from their MVC opponent. But the Mustangs rallied which made for interesting final minutes. “They are a tough and aggressive team which is well-coached,” Pinkham said. “I thought we got out in transition well, but we had trouble guarding people in the perimeter, and an eight-point lead doesn’t last long with a 3-point shot.”
The season’s first close game was a welcome sight for Steve Reny. The senior guard led all scorers with 27 points. He is excited about the team’s early success and believes a hard fought victory will make his teammates more confident in tight games as the season progresses. “I’m excited. This is a good start for Boothbay. This team lost to Winthrop by 12, and shows how we match up against the good teams in the conference,” he said.
Other Seahawk scorers were Hunter Crocker with 17, Nicholas Morley with 10, Sullivan Rice with five, Ben Pearce with four, and Kaleb Ames with three.
Boothbay is 3-0 and travels to Dixfield on Tuesday, Dec. 18 to play Dirigo (1-2). On Thursday, Dec. 20, the Seahawks will host Richmond (1-3).
