While the serious games were on TV this weekend, the exhibition basketball game on Saturday morning at Boothbay Region High School brought lots of laughs and lots of money for the Class of 2025’s Project Graduation trip to Boston in June.

Twenty BRHS graduates and former players – 10 in yellow shirts and 10 in blue shirts emblazoned with “The older we get, the better we were” – “battled” into overtime and a 40-foot shot at the buzzer by Jacob Leonard gave the blue team a chance to hold the gold (painted gold) ball.

The score was – well, it was hard to keep track after the second half as points were added as donations rolled in and teams were given points for the amount of each donation.

The blue team was coached by seniors Lily Nein and Magen Burge and the yellow team was coached by seniors Aidric Canada and Spencer Wenners.

The blue roster included the following (graduation year follows name): Ed Crocker, ’94; Duncan Drapeau, ’17; Kylie Higgins, ’05; Julian Aponte, TBD; Heidi (Davis) Spurgan, ’03; Jacob Leonard, ’17; Jesse Peters, ’13; Hunter Crocker, ’20; Ryan Amaral, ’23; and Chloe Arsenault, ’20.

The yellow team consisted of Korey Lewis, ’94; Jess (Monck) Mullins, ’04; Jaelyn Crocker, ’22; Luke Morley, ’24; Ryan Murphy, ’11; Lauren (Andrews) Carrol, ’06; Bruce Orne, ’12; Ryan Casey, ’98; Ali Hartley, ’08; and Dan Hallinan, ’09.

The old guys, Ed Crocker and Korey Lewis, mixed it up in the first half, shoving each other and putting on a show for the crowd. Lewis sat out the second half with old knees, however. Of course, some of the younger players still showed they could play and most impressive was the 3-point shooting by Leonard, Hartley and Aponte.

Concessions were sold by seniors and their parents, a “Huck-a-Hawk” contest was held, and the fun hour of basketball was a good fundraiser for Project Graduation. According to Sarah Clark, $1,500 was raised for Project Graduation on Saturday.
