Having one of the top players in the state who has yet to lose a regular season match has been a blessing to Boothbay Region High School girls tennis coach Alex Arsenault. It’s been a guaranteed win in three of the 15 years he’s coached.
Laura Chapman, who is now a homeschooled senior, is “one of the top 10 players in the state,” said Arsenault on April 16 during a preseason practice. “She has been the key to the success of our team over the past three years. She plays tennis throughout the year and is on the court elsewhere today.”
Chapman, who is one of the captains on the 2025 squad and three-time Mountain Valley Conference player of the year, plays first singles for the Seahawks.
For the second straight season, Arsenault has enough players to fill the three singles matches and two doubles matches. After the COVID-19 pandemic, it took Arsenault time to rebuild his squad, sometimes fielding only three players.
Besides Chapman, other returnees from 2024 are senior Ivory Cody, juniors Maddie Andreasen, Hannah Kreft and Abigail Orchard. Newcomers are freshmen Izzy Andreasen and Addie Barter.
Arsenault is still working out the match lineup, other than Chapman. Last year, Cody played first doubles with Sarah Kreft, who graduated. Orchard and Andreasen played doubles last year in most of the matches. Kreft played singles and doubles.
Last season, the Seahawks finished 8-4 and upset third-seed Maine Central Institute in the quarterfinals of the Maine Principals’ Association Class C South tournament. The season ended with a semifinal loss to Waynflete.
The preseason practices have been dictated by the weather but the Seahawks did get in one scrimmage at Medomak Valley on April 14, Arsenault said.
With the original home opener changed to a week later, the Seahawks will have their home opener Monday, April 28 against Oak Hill at 4 p.m.
