Food Pantry fresh food voucher program in full swing
In 2015 the Boothbay Region Food Pantry initiated its three-month Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Voucher Program, which provides pantry clients with vouchers worth $10 each, redeemable at our local Hannaford and, during summer months, at Brown’s Farm Stand. The number of vouchers per family is determined by family size, with six the smallest number given and 12 vouchers the largest number.
Over the years the pantry has been able to conduct the three-month program more than once during the year. Pantry directors expect that in 2018 foundation grants and individual donations will allow the pantry for the first time to present the Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Voucher Program without interruption during every month of 2018.
On Jan. 22, pantry directors mailed vouchers to 228 families on the Boothbay peninsula. The vouchers may be used until April 30, at which time a second round of the voucher program will begin. The program has been highly successful, with many pantry clients expressing their appreciation for the chance to acquire for their families fresh fruit and locally grown vegetables at no cost. Pantry directors are confident that the expanded program will yield even higher levels of satisfaction by pantry directors and clients alike.
