Topside Inn owners Mark Osborn and Buzz Makarewicz are busy running their Boothbay Harbor bed and breakfast during these prime summer months.

But not known for resting on their laurels, between booking rooms, keeping the award-winning inn and all its components sparkling clean, and cooking some of the most coveted breakfasts in the area, the pair is now in the throes of planning a fundraiser to benefit the local food pantry.

“In light of all the negativity going on in our country and even in our community we wanted to do something with a positive message,” Osborn said in an email. “They say even the smallest things make a difference. Buzz and I have been thinking of ways we can make a difference.”

Beginning on Friday, Sept. 1, the inn will be opening its doors to the public to come in and and enjoy a gourmet breakfast with the guests at the inn.

As stated on its website, “Breakfast at the Topside Inn is an event,” featuring Makarewicz’s sweet pastries and Osborn’s delectable savories, all made using the freshest locally sourced ingredients available, from farmers and their own gardens, and fresh seafood from local fishermen.

“This is where our local ingredients have the opportunity to shine and where we get to put twists on traditional favorites,” the website states.

The breakfast menu for the September fundraiser will include a continental buffet with homemade breads, jams, whipped butters, granola, fruit, yogurt, cheeses, juices and locally roasted coffee and tea. In addition, a composed “dish of the day” will be cooked to order and served. It may be anything from house-smoked salmon over lentil and roasted pear hash with poached eggs, to carrot cake pancakes with a maple cream cheese drizzle served with crispy bacon.

The menu will change daily, so call ahead for information about what will be served on any given day. Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Only eight reservations will be taken for each morning, so call ahead. The cost is $25 per guest.

Plan a morning in September beginning with a gourmet breakfast in a lovely dining room, or outside on a deck overlooking the harbor, and help someone else in need of a good meal. All proceeds will benefit the Boothbay Region Food Pantry, and additional donations will be welcomed.
