Who is the oldest resident of Southport?
At the age of 102, the late Dr. Edgar T. Gibson was considered the oldest resident of Southport Island. At the Aug. 2 meeting of the Southport Board of Selectmen, the board discussed who the town’s Boston Post Cane should pass to next.
Selectman Smith Climo lamented the fact that they had never been able to present the cane Gibson, who was well-known and highly regarded in the community.
Traditionally given to a town’s oldest resident, 700 towns in New England were presented with canes from the Boston Post newspaper. The selectmen are asking for nominations for the next recipient of the cane. Call the town office at (207) 633-3318 or email TownofSouthport@roadrunner.com.
The board also accepted a thank you letter from Molly Thibault, one of three Boothbay Region High School students from Southport who received the Arthur S. Bryant Fund Scholarship at this year’s awards banquet. The other two seniors were Nicole Clarke and Erica Eames.
