Griffin running for reelection
Denise Griffin, current vice-chairman of the Boothbay Harbor Board of Selectmen, is running for reelection in May.
“I think we have a great board right now that works well together,” Griffin said. “We've made great progress towards our goals. I want to continue that forward momentum. We don't like drama and controversy. We prefer to work in harmony, and a big part of that is the excellent and experienced town staff and our Town Manager Tom Woodin.”
Griffin has several goals for her next term if reelected.
“I really want to do whatever it takes to maintain the quaint, New England charm we have in this region,” Griffin said. “This can be done by supporting walkability and biking, new signage, working with the chamber to both increase tourism and business in the region. Of course, the key to this is maintaining the historic fishing industry we have.”
Griffin also wants to finish the work on the Fish Pier, increase the amount of green space in town, replace the tennis courts on Route 27, complete the comprehensive plan, create a gateway to town with an information kiosk and develop walking trails through town.
“I think that it's really important to think about residents physical health and well-being,” Griffin said. “Walking is one of the best things we can do, and we, the selectmen, should support that.”
Griffin also wants to do these projects while maintaining the financial stability of Boothbay Harbor and making sure taxes do not increase.
“The town is in really good financial health, and we need to maintain that while keeping taxes low,” Griffin said. “What really helps is having a budget committee made up of volunteers who bring the voice of the voters to us. Their input is invaluable.”
Griffin also feels it is important to take into account all of Boothbay Harbor's residents in the work of the selectmen, not just a select few.
“I really want to memorialize Rev. Dr. Mary Jo Zimmerli,” Griffin said. “Her approach to including and embracing everybody is an example we should follow by making sure we are very inclusive in our work.” Zimmerli died on February 27, 2014.
Griffin lives in Boothbay Harbor and works at the First National Bank in Damariscotta.
She attended Bowdoin College, where she met her husband, Chip Griffin, and got a master’s degree in business from Boston University.
Voting hours will be Friday, May 2, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Town Meeting will be held the next morning at 9 a.m. at the Boothbay Region Elementary School.
