Selectmen tell Goodkowsky: LCTV proposal bad idea
A Lincoln County commissioner calmed the nerves of Boothbay selectmen April 23. In previous weeks, selectmen became aware of a Lincoln County TV proposal to become part of county government. April 9, selectmen briefly discussed the proposal and concluded it was bad for local residents.
All five selectmen opposed the proposed merger and wanted to tell their County Commissioner Evan Goodkowsky personally at a selectboard meeting. "I'll speak for myself, but this is poor use of county tax dollars for something which doesn't benefit us at all," Selectman Chuck Cunningham said April 9.
Goodkowsky arrived at the April 23 meeting and Cunnigham asked the first question. "Are they going to become part of the county?"
Goodkowsky responded, "Probably not." Goodkowsky explained discussions with LCTV began with commissioners asking about the cable access television station's asking about broadcasting their bi-monthly meetings. "This resulted in a proposal followed by more proposals which included LCTV becoming a part of the county," he said.
In other action, selectmen joined the Boothbay Harbor and Southport boards in approving John Oakes' appointment as regional emergency management director. Oakes lives in Wiscasset and has worked with the county EMA department.
On his resume, Oakes listed he was a volunteer firefighter and had several trainings and certificates related to the job: Basic Emergency Level 1, emergency operations/reporting, local damage assessment, community emergency response team trainer, communications leader, traffic incident trainer, and emergency operations center basics.
Selectmen approved a Class C special amusement permit for Friends of Thai Daughters' performance June 26 at 29 Summerhaven Lane. The board also renewed an innkeeper's license for Smuggler's Cove Inn on Ocean Point Road.
Selectmen meet next at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 14 in the conference room.
