FBI Boston confirms 'routine' law enforcement activity at refuse district
Boothbay Selectman Steve Lewis didn't attend the board's March 26 meeting. Earlier in the day, he was placed on administrative leave at his day job as Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District's manager.
March 27, FBI Boston confirmed agents were at the transfer station conducting what they called "routine law enforcment activity."
"The FBI never confirms whether they are conducting a criminal investigation, but we were on scene," said FBI Public Affairs Specialist Tim Callery.
During the selectmen's meeting, a resident asked about what happened at the dump. During the public forum, the Boothbay Register asked direct questions regarding Lewis.
Selectmen were asked if Lewis would attend the meeting. Town Manager Dan Bryer responded "no." The Register asked if Lewis had contacted the town or any board member. Again, Bryer said "no."
The Register asked if selectmen could confirm the FBI presence at the transfer station. "I think we all can confirm it, but nobody knows what's going on," said Selectman Russ Pinkham.
Boothbay Selectboard Chairman Chuck Cunningham is also a BRRDD director. He referred all other questions regarding the visit to FBI Boston.
Julia Latter, the refuse district's treasurer, told the Boothbay Register on March 27 she asked board chairman Jody Lewis for a special meeting Wednesday morning (March 26). She declined to state the special meeting's purpose and directed questions to Jody Lewis. She said he would have to consult with their (district's) lawyers prior to commenting. She referred further questions to FBI Boston.
Jody Lewis, not related to Steve Lewis, spoke to the Boothbay Register on March 27. He confirmed the directors held a special meeting on Wednesday morning to discuss a personnel issue. "It was a short meeting and we voted to place the manager on unpaid leave," he said.
The Boothbay Register asked him why the media wasn't notified about the special meeting. "We didn't have to. Our bylaws allow us to call a special meeting without notice to discuss a personnel issue," he said.
The Boothbay Register observed two FBI agents and a Boothbay Harbor police officer at the transfer station March 26.
Boothbay Harbor Police Chief Doug Snyder said BHPD was at the refuse district Wednesday to assist the FBI, and his department is not involved in the case.
Jody Lewis reported William Johnson is the interim district operations manager.
