Man of many hats adds another
Current fire chief, harbor master, and reserve police office Nicholas Upham has added another job with the town of Boothbay Harbor.
At the October 28 selectmen's meeting, Upham was unanimously appointed to the position of shellfish warden.
Vice Chairman Robert Splaine said he had no reservations about Upham whatsoever, but wondered if he could handle the additional duties this position would entail.
Upham responded that because none of his jobs were full time, he still had eight to 16 hours every week he could work. He also stated that the job of shellfish warden folded nicely into harbor management, which he is already in charge of.
Chairman Bill Hamblen said that with Upham's experience being a reserve police officer, he already had some experience necessary in the duties of a shellfish warden, which include enforcing the shellfish conservation ordinances of four towns: Boothbay Harbor, Boothbay, Edgecomb and Southport.
The most common duty of a shellfish warden is ensuring local shellfishermen carry the necessary local license required to harvest commercially or recreationally.
Selectman Jay Warren said he felt Upham was very qualified for the position.
“I'll be counting on the marine patrol to help me learn all the areas where local diggers harvest,” Upham said after the meeting. “I'm looking forward to working with them.”
