Resident seeks definition of Southport residency
What is the definition of a Southport resident was a question selectmen received during the March 12 board meeting. Karen Cronk delivered the question, but selectmen didn't have a definitive answer. She was directed to consult with Town Clerk Donna Climo or Planning Board Chairman Skip Simonds.
On March 13, the Boothbay Register asked Climo for her understanding of what defines a Southport resident. She responded there was no mandatory length of stay. "Some states have six months and a day, but Maine doesn't have that," Climo said. As far as Maine residency requirements, Climo said Maine didn't have a formal definition of a state or town resident. "It really depends on the reason why a residency definition is needed," she said. "There is wording in various state statutes regarding residency."
As town clerk, Climo views a Southport resident as someone who makes their primary residence in Southport. "It's where you register your car, vote or seek a fishing license. It's also the address one uses for filing state and federal taxes."
In other action, selectmen approved annual municipal appointments: Lee Thompson, plumbing inspector, code enforcement officer and building inspector; Jim Gagnon, assistant plumbing inspector, code enforcement officer and building inspector; David Cody, emergency management director; Tim Maurer, harbor master; Betsy Pratt, animal control officer; and Gerry Gamage and Stephen Gaudette, constables. These appointments run until March 11, 2026.
Selectmen received Southport's county tax committment of $1.400,947 which is due Sept. 1. Selectmen meet next at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 19 in the town office.
