Seahawks tie Bulldogs in Unified basketball
The Boothbay Region High School Seahawks took on the Bulldogs of Hall Dale in their final regular season game, Tuesday. March 11 at home. The game, close throughout, ended in a 73-73 tie.
Eddie Carpenter for the Seahawks and Justin Cole for the Bulldogs tipped off play with first possession going to the Bulldogs for a layup. Carpenter scored first for the Seahawks with a bank shot. The game remained close throughout the first half, with a 39-35 Bulldogs advantage at halftime.
The second half ignited both teams' 3-point games, trading shots back and forth. In all, Seahawks scored 14 3-point shots, seven by freshman sharp-shooter Brandon Seigars, five by senior superstar Carpenter and two by recovering Matthew Jackson who returned to play after missing two games due to illness. Two minutes into the second half, Carpenter banked three of three 3-pointers to bring the Seahawks within one point. With seven seconds left in the game, he drained his final 3-pointer to tie the game in an exciting season-ending, buzzer-beater moment, causing fans to leap to their feet and cheer his name.
Juniors Anthony Angelico and Chloe Joneth played a relaxed game scoring six and eight points, respectively. Jackson scored eight points. Seigars scored only 3-pointers, racking up an impressive 21 points and Carpenter worked his magic, leading the team, racking up assists and rebounds and posting 30 points.
The Seahawks have been the smallest team in number of players at each matchup this season, with opponents often double or triple their bench size. And, while the Seahawks finish the season winless at 0-6-1, wins are abundant in individual accomplishments: This season saw Carpenter flourish both as a leader and player, showcased tremendous improvement in the games of Angelico and Joneth and welcomed freshmen 3-point sharpshooter Seigars and consistent double-digit scorer Jackson. Helpers Cole Hyson, Casey Phelps, Ronan Drage and others made this season possible in so many ways.
The team will don jerseys one more time, Thursday March 13 in a much anticipated faceoff between players and BRHS staff.
The game was officiated by Clayton Pottle. Hannah Hills performed the national anthem. Virginia Massey and Connor Dumont coach the Bulldogs. Seahawks are coached by Dennis Dacus and Tanya Thibault.
