Rising Tide makes donations to local nonprofits

Rising Tide Community Market in Damariscotta recently donated $300 each to Focus on Agriculture in Rural Maine Schools (FARMS) and the Lincoln County Animal Shelter as part of its “Co-ops for Community Day” program.
Through this program, in 2012-2013, Rising Tide donates 1 percent of Wednesday sales, up to $300 per month, to local nonprofits that have been nominated and selected by co-op member-owners.
FARMS was the Co-ops for Community Day recipient for the month of June 2013. FARMS is well-known locally through its work in many local schools, focusing on nutrition, local foods and gardening. They also work with schools to increase the availability and purchasing of local foods into school lunch and snack programs.
FARMS is currently developing a Community Kitchen in the upstairs of Rising Tide which will offer cooking and nutritional classes, and a variety of opportunities for people of all ages to develop healthy eating habits. For more information, visit www.mefarms.org.
The July 2013 recipient of this donation program was the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, located in Edgecomb. The Lincoln County Animal Shelter provides a temporary, loving home for stray and abused cats, dogs and other small animals, and facilitates their adoption into permanent homes. They are a no-kill shelter. Their website is www.lcasmaine.com.
As of August 2013, the Co-ops for Community Day program will donate 0.5 percent of Wednesday sales with no cap on the amount of the donation to recipient organizations for their allotted month. This allows organizations to mobilize their supporters to shop at Rising Tide on Wednesdays and increase the amount of the donation they will receive. September’s recipient is the Ecumenical Food Pantry, based in Newcastle.
Upcoming donation recipients are: October 2013, New Hope for Women; November and December 2013, Rising Tide Cooperative Community Fund; January 2014, Community Energy Fund of Lincoln County; and February 2014, Damariscotta River Association.
