Repairs begin on bridge
Beginning September 9, the Pratts Island Bridge will be closed from 9 a.m. to noon, four days a week.
The bridge, which connects Southport to Pratts Island, is slated to undergo a thorough rebuilding. Pratts Island resident Paul Coulombe donated the funds to redo the wooden bridge.
On August 8, Southport residents approved a plan that would close the bridge to vehicles in advance to shorten the time the bridge would be closed.
From Mondays through Thursdays until October 16 the bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic, but open to pedestrians in the morning. It will also be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
From October 16 until completion, the bridge will be closed to vehicles 24 hours a day, every day.
Foot traffic will always be allowed on the bridge and a fire engine has been stationed on Pratts Island. Several parking spaces will be available on the mainland side of the bridge.
At an August board of selectmen’s meeting, marine contractor Skip Rideout said he expected the project to finished before Thanksgiving.
