Recycling continues during construction
Good news and bad news this week at the dump.
The good news: recycling will continue during construction of the new recycling center. The bad news: the dump once again will accept only #2 plastics.
Refuse District Manager Steve Lewis said the recycling building will be torn down either Monday or Tuesday, Sept. 30 or October 2. “The traffic pattern will change at that time with people entering through the exit gate,” Lewis said.
Recycling will continue at a temporary station near the scale.
Lewis said the refuse station will no longer accept all plastics for recycling and has returned to its previous policy of only accepting #2 plastics.
“We have had to stop taking all plastics because there is not a market available,” Lewis said. “We would have to pay to get rid of plastic if we continued doing all plastic.”
Lewis said by accepting only #2 plastic, the district can sell recyclable plastic for $400/ton.
