Penguin Plunge: Hands and toes welcome
Larry Brown, longtime organizer of the Penguin Plunge, a fundraiser for the Boothbay Region YMCA’s second grade swim program, said he anticipates a very cold Jan. 1 – the date of the Plunge – so he is bringing back an idea he began a few years ago when the weather was frigid.
“A few years ago I came up with a way to allow would-be plungers to participate by placing a hand or foot in the water. It was done for very cold days and also if someone whose health might be compromised by going into the freezing waters of Linekin Bay,” said Brown via email. “This year is a perfect example.”
Money for the 16th annual fundraiser can be pledged at the Y or on the day of the Plunge, which will again be held at the boat launch on Murray Hill Road in East Boothbay on Monday, Jan. 1 at 11 a.m.
Also, supporters can purchase a Penguin Plunge hat for $25 at the Y, with the proceeds helping the second grade swim program.
