Oak Point Farm: Now the work begins
On March 28, Boothbay Region Land Trust (BRLT) closed on the purchase of Oak Point Farm, and we could not be more excited! But, the work to turn Oak Point Farm into a public preserve is just beginning.
With the help of volunteers, Lands Manager Michael Warren has been hard at work redefining existing trails and designing new ones. Plans have been made for a new property entrance from Samoset Road and a suitable parking area for visitors. We are making necessary repairs, such as re-shingling roofs, to preserve the integrity of the historic farmhouse, as well as the other structures on the property.
Working with consultants, the BRLT Board has also developed a plan for farmhouse retrofitting to allow for administrative activities and public use. These changes will include an ADA entrance and bathrooms to accommodate all ages and mobility. Understanding the financial commitment associated with this project, fundraising activities are also underway to cover the costs of property improvements and pay off the mortgage within three years.
Boothbay Region Land Trust staff will continue to be available at our current 137 Townsend Avenue, Boothbay Harbor location until October of this year. At that time, we hope to relocate to the farmhouse at Oak Point Farm. We certainly do not expect work on the farm to be complete by then, so please bear with us during construction. Our plan is to officially open the property to the public in spring of 2018.
You can continue to follow our progress through the Boothbay Register, bbrlt.org, or following us on Facebook. Keep your eye out for the few educational events which have already been planned on the farm. Feel free to contact Boothbay Region Land Trust staff at (207) 633-4818, brlt@bbrlt.org, or stop by our office to learn more about this exciting project. We also are always open to hearing your ideas and feedback. After all, this land is your land!
