Local births, senior walkers celebrated on St. Patrick’s Day
For Boothbay Harbor police officer Larry Brown and Boothbay Region Elementary School fifth grader Emery Lorrain, Saint Patrick’s Day means more than wearing green. March 17 is the date of their births. For the past three years, the two have celebrated together with a special lunch during the school day.
But this year was different. The two participated in the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Senior Lunch held on March 16 at the Boothbay Region YMCA. Brown and Lorrain assisted in serving the Irish stew made by local chef Abbie Shaw for about two dozen seniors.
“We thought we’d do something different this year,” Brown said. “We talked it over and decided to take part in the senior event for the Y.”
Besides celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day, the Y celebrated the achievements of 106 “Awesome Seniors Y-Walkers” who participated in the indoor walking program. Since 2014, over 272 local seniors, ages 62-99, have participated in the year round program. Seniors walk around the Y’s indoor track on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m to noon. In 2016, 106 Awesome Senior active walkers combined for 16,320 laps or 2,040 miles around the track. Each session, about 14 walkers took part each session, according to program statistics.
The Awesome Y-Walker walking the most miles this year was Connie Machon with 244. Bill Dunton walked the most days. He walked 92 times, for a total of 180 miles. The oldest participant was Trudie Seybold, 99, who walked 26 times, covering five miles.
