Hendricks Hill Museum kicks off summer season with open house

The Hendricks Hill Museum on Southport Island hosted its annual Open House Tuesday to commence its summer season. This event acted as a precursor to the museum's official open on June 28.
This year especially inspires some excitement as it marks the 30th anniversary of the museum’s opening, a milestone that will be further commemorated by a special celebration at the town hall July 16.
The open house was well attended with between 30 and 40 community members, seasoned volunteers and first time visitors spanning generations coming to tour the museum. There was little reprieve from the ring of the bell attached to the front entrance, signaling another new arrival. Jean Thompson, a member of the Friends of the Museum and longtime volunteer, said the event had its biggest turnout ever.
Board of Trustees member Evelyn Sherman pointed to the good weather and increased advertising for the day’s success.
John and Carol Emery, first-time visitors to the museum but frequent summer residents, conveyed how impressed they were by the museum and its volunteers. When asked what they thought of the museum, John Emery said enthusiastically, “It's awesome!” The rest of the visitors shared this sentiment. Similar expressions of awe appeared as the day wore on.
While there are no new exhibits this year, with the constant flow of donations, items keep being added to the displays. Through this practice, the museum seeks to stay fluid and evolve in its attractions, just as the community it was created to celebrate does.
The museum will also continue the “Small Talks” it introduced last year on the museum's genealogical resources, and a specialized look at the museum’s boathouse. Two new specialty talks, one focusing on the life of local artist Morgan Rhee Jr. and the other exploring the history of ice harvesting in the region, will be offered in August.
Call 633-1102 for more information on these events or to reserve your space. The museum resumes its normal summer hours beginning June 28, open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
