Free Clothing Closet switches seasons
The Free Clothing Closet will hold its last open day for summer clothing on Saturday, Sept. 14, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Closet is located behind the United Methodist Church in Boothbay Harbor.
After that, the Closet will be closed for several weeks to prepare for its fall and winter season. It will reopen on Saturday, Oct. 5, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with plenty of coats, sweaters and clothing for the winter.
Thereafter, it will be open every Wednesday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the winter. Please check back for new items on a weekly basis.
Kit Sherrill, one of the founders of the Free Clothing Closet, and its coordinator for the last three years, has resigned that position, but will stay on as a substitute for the important sorting operation. Volunteers for the Free Clothing Closet are grateful for his leadership and thank him for his outstanding service.
Taking over will be Helen Meserve and Joyce Armendaris, who will act as co-chairs. For any information or ideas on how to better the operations, please call 207-633-5666 or email hmeserve@gmail.com.
The Closet was open this summer thanks to the loyalty and dedication of its summer volunteers: Jen Auber, David Butteworth, Alison Butterworth, Bawn Clifton, Edee Deen Crosby, Polly Gibson, Barb Harle, Stephanie Hawke, Ham Meserve, Jane Norton, Louise Phippen, Mariann Powell, Audrey Riley and Barbara Saxon. Thanks go to all of them for their service.
Has your child outgrown his or her school clothes? Do you have any extra coats in your closet? Share what you don’t need with those who are less fortunate. We want to open in October with a full closet!
Please take all good, used clothing, shoes, gloves and hats to the Blue Box at the Boothbay Region Refuse station, located on Country Club Road in Boothbay. The Blue Box is located to the left of the large dumpster. Be sure to put all clothing in bags. No household items.
The Free Clothing Closet, founded under the auspices of the Boothbay Region Community Resources, is operated on the honor system. Our motto is: “Take what you need, leave enough for others.” The closet is open to all from October 5 through late April for winter clothing. Summer hours will be announced in the spring.
