Southport
‘Fern killer’ on the loose
Wed, 08/14/2013 - 8:45am
Southport resident Evelyn Sherman reported hearing a loud bang at around 9:30 p.m. on August 8.
The next morning she saw her neighbor's mailbox had been run over, a maple tree had been side swiped, and there were tire marks running through her front yard.
The only casualties were the ferns and hosta Sherman said, but judging by the scrapes on the maple tree measured at 5-feet high, it appears the vehicle went air-born after flattening the mailbox. Lincoln County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene the next morning.
Vehicle debris was discovered in the Sherman's garden. Southport residents are now on the lookout for a vehicle with driverside damage and red paint, after red paint was found scraped off onto the maple tree.
