Community Center seeks help being cool, green
The Community Center is seeking funds to update its air conditioning.
The rooftop HVAC system is more than 30 years old according to board president Shawn Lewin. The estimated cost to replace it is about $25,000, but it’s hoped that installing a new compressor for $5,000 will address the problem and keep the Center comfortable for its visitors.
As Lewin explained, the HVAC system had problems last fall and the filters and thermostats were adjusted. With winter’s arrival, the air conditioning wasn’t needed and it wasn’t until recent warm temperatures that it became apparent the cooling system had failed.
Rental of the space does not include the HVAC, electric or plumbing systems and as a result, any updates must be provided by the tenants. As fellow board member Terri Serino explained, “Retrofitting is difficult and expensive and we need a custom-built compressor since there are new environmental requirements for the system.”
As an example, Freon can no longer be used, so components will need to be changed to accommodate the new coolant.
“It’s a roll of the dice,” Lewin commented. “If the replacement compressor works, we could get 5-10 more years from it. If not, we will have to replace the whole system but we would have had to install a new compressor anyway.”
Once the needed funds are received, it should only take 5-10 days for the unit to be built and shipped, so the Center could be cooler quickly.
The Center is also seeking contributions to help it become greener. A dishwasher is being bought to reduce the use of paper and plastic products. Donations of small plates and flatware are requested.
Those wishing to contribute to the Center may do so in a number of ways. Checks can be mailed to the Community Center at P.O. Box 335, Boothbay Harbor, 04538. The Center is a nonprofit and contributions are tax-deductible.
Cash donations, dishes and flatware can be brought to the Center at the Meadow Mall between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. To donate by credit card, call 633-9876 or visit boothbaycommunitycenter.org and select “Donate Now."
